Sri Lanka faces El Niño-linked dry weather, heat alerts, and rough seas

Sri Lanka is experiencing severe drought and extreme heat in several districts, affecting over 81,000 people. The Department of Meteorology has issued warm weather advisories for multiple districts, with the heat index expected to reach "Caution" levels in parts of seven districts. The Health Ministry has warned of heat-related health risks amid these extreme temperatures. The government plans to launch a special program to provide drinking water to affected areas as dry weather persists.

Simultaneously, advisories have been issued for strong winds, rough seas, and high waves in sea areas around the island. An amber advisory is in effect for strong winds and rough seas in several coastal areas, and for high waves in sea areas extending from Puttalam to Galle, and from Chilaw to Pottuvil. These warnings are directed at naval and fishing communities.

These weather conditions are linked to the El Niño weather pattern, contributing to the prevailing dry conditions and water shortages. The National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC) has reported that 81,605 people, belonging to 25,563 families, have been affected by the El Niño-linked dry weather.

Why it scored 8/10: The event has a major national impact due to widespread drought, heat alerts, and rough sea conditions affecting a large population and requiring government intervention, as reported by multiple credible sources.
