Sri Lanka prepares for strong El Niño with special committee meetings and water supply measures
The Sri Lankan Meteorological Department has warned of a very strong El Niño likely by the year-end. In response, a special committee has been established to review water supply and emergency measures.
This Special Ministerial Sub-Committee and Officials’ Committee, appointed to address the impacts of the El Niño climate phenomenon, has met for the third time. The meeting, held at the Presidential Secretariat on Monday (17) afternoon, was chaired by Minister of Environment Dr. Dammika Patabendi and included extensive discussions on action plans.
The President has ordered action to be taken before reservoirs run dry, in light of dry weather forecasts. A circular has also been issued to ensure water supply during future El Niño-related droughts. Additionally, the President has emphasized the importance of an uninterrupted supply of essential goods and services during El Niño conditions.
Why it scored 8/10: The event involves a major national climate warning with potential widespread impact on water supply and essential services, prompting high-level government intervention and policy adjustments, as reported by multiple credible sources over a short period.
