Public Health Inspectors withdraw from dengue control duties nationwide due to airport health office dispute

Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) across Sri Lanka have withdrawn from dengue control duties and other related activities. This action is in protest of the alleged transfer of a senior Public Health Inspector at the Bandaranaike International Airport Health Office.

The Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors’ Association has cited serious concerns regarding alleged irregularities and administrative shortcomings at the Katunayake airport health office as the reason for their protest.

In addition to withdrawing from dengue control, the union has also suspended airport quarantine-related duties nationwide. The General Secretary of the union, Chamil Muthukuda, confirmed this decision.

Why it scored 8/10: The withdrawal of PHIs from dengue control duties nationwide has a major national impact on public health, especially given the ongoing threat of dengue, and involves a significant labor dispute with potential policy implications.
