Navi Pillay awarded 2026 Nobel Peace Prize; US sanctions ICC shortly after
Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a South African human rights lawyer and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on Friday in Oslo, recognizing Pillay for her work in promoting peace and international law.
Hours after Pillay received the Nobel Peace Prize, the administration of US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC).
President Trump also stated that Norway has an "indelible stain" for not awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize.
Why it scored 5/10: The event involves a significant international award and US foreign policy actions, which are notable global developments but have indirect rather than direct major national impact on Sri Lanka.
