Monks protest near Presidential Secretariat, court order issued

A group of Buddhist monks and laypersons staged a sit-in protest near the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo. The protest continued for an unspecified duration, with reports indicating it was ongoing on Friday, October 16.

Discussions were held with the protesting monks, including an intervention by Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake. However, these talks reportedly failed, and the monks refused to end their protest and leave the premises.

In response to the protest, the Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena issued a court order on Friday, October 16. This order restricted 54 protesters, including 30 monks, from occupying the Presidential Secretariat premises. The police had obtained this court order on the grounds that the protest was being held in a high-security zone.

Why it scored 6/10: The event involves a protest by Buddhist monks near a significant government building, a court order, and intervention by a high-ranking official, indicating notable national news with political implications.
