Iconic Tusker Kavantissa Dies, Sparking Calls for Investigation and Arrest of Suspect

Concerns grew after the iconic tusker Kavantissa was spotted lying in a paddy field. Businessman Dudley Sirisena offered assistance, and wildlife veterinarians worked to save the ailing elephant. The Ministry of Environment urged the public to avoid the area, and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa visited Kavantissa. The Environment Ministry approved bringing a veterinary team from Thailand to treat the tusker.

Despite efforts, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa announced that Kavantissa had died. This loss was widely mourned in Sri Lanka, with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa sharing a tribute. An expert team was set to investigate the death, and questions arose regarding who was responsible, including whether Kavantissa was shot.

Sajith Premadasa paid his last respects and called for foreign experts to investigate the death. The Director General of Wildlife Conservation defended protection efforts, stating Kavantissa was like an "80-year-old human." The Environment Minister announced an independent investigation into Kavantissa's death, and the Ministry later requested a CID probe into whether the death was part of an organized plot. Sajith Premadasa also launched a new elephant protection initiative in Kavantissa's memory.

Police subsequently arrested a suspect with two firearms in connection with the shooting of Kavantissa. The suspect was identified as a Skills Development Officer.

Why it scored 7/10: The death of an iconic tusker, followed by an investigation into its cause and the arrest of a suspect, generated significant national attention and concern, impacting wildlife conservation discussions.
